HEALTH CARE PROJECT FOR NEWLY BORN CHILDERN

Inauguration of NEW BORN SCREENING FOR HEARING camp at Area Hospital, Vanasthalipuram, Ranga Reddy district (Hyderabad), Telangana:

Hearing Impairment is a hidden disability, usually detected only after two years of age.  Late detection causes irreversible stunting of language development potential of the child. Detection of hearing impairment in infants by 6 months of age has proven advantages, over those detected later, in acquiring normal speech and language regardless of the degree of hearing impairment.

Number of Babies Screened: Total till 23rd Oct 2019: 74

02-10-2019: 19, 09-10-20119: 17, 23-10-2019: 38

SAHI (Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired) in association with SSSSO, Telangana has started a new project viz “New Born Screening for Hearing” at Area Hospital, Vanasthalipuram, R.R. District, Hyderabad on 02.10.2019.

A trained audiologist carries out the test in a quiet room.  He places a small soft tipped ear piece in the outer part of the baby ear, which sends clicking sounds down the ear.  When the ear receives sound, the inner part, known as the Cochlear, produces an echo. Using an automated machine, the audiologist can see how the baby ears respond to the sound. Each ear is tested in turn.  It takes only 5-10 minutes. This test has a sensitivity of more than 90%.

The audiologist will explain the results of the Oto Acoustic Emission (OAE) test to the patient attendant after the test is completed.  If the baby does not pass the test, the audiologist will arrange for further investigations like Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry, (BERA) and Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR). These investigations give better information about the baby’s hearing.

The project is inaugurated by Dr. Ramesh Kumar, Medical Superintendent, Area Hospital, Vanasthalipuram, and Dr. K. Ram Babu, MS (ENT), Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad .Sri Srinivas, Chief Audiometry Department and State Medical Coordinator, Telangana also participated.

All newly born children in the hospital below the age of one year will be screened on every 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month. Patients identified for defective hearing, will be taken to Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad for further investigations like BERA etc.  It is totally free for all children.
